The Congregation of Christian Brothers

WHO ARE THE CHRISTIAN BROTHERS?

We follow the example set by Jesus and His Apostles, living communally, praying, striving for social justice, and teaching. Our efforts are particularly focused on serving youth, both in traditional academic settings and through a variety of innovative ministries launched to meet the shifting needs of our ever-changing society.

We express our calling this way:
“We Christian Brothers are called b y God as religious in consecrated brotherhood for the evangelization of youth within the mission of the Church. In brotherhood we are called to fidelity to the Gospel of Jesus. In our response we acknowledge both our gifts and our need for continuing conversion. Our way of life leads to spiritual freedom and simplicity through humble service of the poor, in whom especially we find Jesus Christ, who is Lord.”

WHAT IS A BROTHER?

A Brother is a man who is striving to find where God is calling him who is striving to be a man of prayer while working with others in serving youth and the marginalized poor. He is a man who is called to be a companion, helper and supporter – a brother – to those who are most in need. “To be a Christian Brother is to receive a precious gift which invites us daily to walk the Emmaus way into the unfolding mystery of our quest for God.”

BROTHERS AROUND THE WORLD

The Congregation of Christian Brothers is an international organization founded in Ireland in 1802 by Edmund Rice, a Catholic layman. We minister in over 30 countries around the world. Worldwide the Congregation is organized into a series of provinces or regions. Today, in the Americas, over 300 brothers live in scores of small communities and serve and support ministries throughout Canada, the United States, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and the West Indies. We also have a number of North American Brothers working in Africa and Ireland.
