Justin Martyr
(c. 110-165 A.D.). In his defense of the faith in Dialogue with Trypho, he writes this way:
[The Son of God] became man through a Virgin, so that the disobedience caused by the serpent might
be destroyed in the same way it had begun. For Eve, who was virgin and undefiled, gave birth to
disobedience and death after listening to the serpent's words. But the Virgin Mary conceived faith and
joy; for when the angel Gabriel brought her the glad tidings that the Holy Spirit would come upon her
and that the power of the Most High would overshadow her, so that the Holy One born of her would
be the Son of God, she answered, "Let it be done to me according to your word" (Lk 1:38). Thus was
born of her the [Child] about whom so many Scriptures speak, as we have shown. Through him, God
crushed the serpent, along with those angels and men who had become like serpents. (Quoted from
Mary and the Fathers of the Church, by Luigi Gambero, Ignatius, p. 47)
1. Elisabeth blesses both the child and His mother and shows reverence for Mary and the Child with the question who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to see me. Notice how the mother and the child are so close that in Elisabeth’s womb (John the Baptist) jumps for joy at the sound of Mary’s voice. John the Baptist and Elisabeth represent Israel in its waiting for the messiah. Mary and Jesus are the comfort for God's people. They are the flesh-and Blood icon of the Woman and her Seed from Genesis.
2. At the Presentation in the Temple Luke 2:22 We have seen how Elisabeth the mother of John the Baptist exclaims how both Mother and Son are sharing in the blessing “ blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. But also in the presentation in the temple we see Simeon exclaims how Mary will also share in Jesus suffering “A sword will pierce through you own soul this also brings back to mind again Genesis 3:15 showing the suffering of Satin striking at their heal causing suffering. We have to ask how and Why Mary is sharing in this suffering.
3. At the wedding at Cana, Jesus addresses his own mother as “woman this again in context brings us back to the Woman in Genesis. Mary act as a advocate when she ask Jesus to make more wine for the wedding she also acts as a mediator when she tells them to “ do whatever he tells you” Jesus shows his willing ness to grant his mothers wishes even when he says “woman what is it to you and I” He immediately does what she ask.
